Cool Jazz

Would anyone be interested in an LP release, perhaps a 2-LP set of the Carmen McRae • At Ratso’s (including v.1 and v.2)?  Please send feedback or comment. This is one of Carmen’s finest performance and worthy of a lacquer release if we gather enough interest. Please offer opinion or interest!

Our own Don Peake, as a member of The Wrecking Crew, was today committed to stone on the Hollywood Guitar Center’s Rock Walk. MC Gary Owens (KMPC, Laugh-In) recalled great stories of yesteryear referring to Don, Glen Campbell, Hal Blaine, Carol Kaye, Joe Osborne, Earl Palmer, Jim Gordon, Larry Knecktel, Barney Cassel, Billy Strange, Jim Horne, Plas Johnson, Leon Russell, Mac Rebennack (aka Dr. John), Don Randi and many many more legends of rock and roll. They were The Wrecking Crew see Wikipedia.  These guys were Hollywood’s first call recording session players, dubbed The Wrecking Crew after being accused of “wrecking” the music business by playing multiple sessions a day. They actually contributed to most of the hits of the day coming out of Hollywood. They backed Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson, The Beach Boys, Sunny & Cher, The Platters, The Drifters, The Coasters, Mama’s & Papa’s, Neil Diamond, The Monkees, even the Pink Panther theme (go Plas). They were the players behind Herb Alpert, Bert Bacharach and of course Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound.” You might say there would have been few hits rotating on KFWB, KRLA, KHJ, KFRC, KAAY, WABC, WLCY, WNOE, WLS or WLAC (what great radio) without the extraordinary talents of these great players. “And the hits, just keep on comin’!”  The Wrecking Crew were recently inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame back in Nashville, and now this tribute at the Guitar Center. Congratulations to all of you! This was a fun afternoon, but most of all – thanks for your hot licks – thanks for the music!

This film score was commissioned by my friend Wes Craven in 1991. Wes called me and said that he was mixing the film at Universal, and that he needed me to come in right away. He showed me the film and said that he wanted the music to be exciting and to have a lot of movement for the chases.

Included on this CD for the very first time are the actual musical sketches that I first submitted to Wes when we started the project.

Please enjoy this music.

Thank you,

Don Peake

Mark Llewellyn - Black Hills Gold

Black Hills Gold is an easy listening mix of Country, Pop and Inspirational music. It began when “Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying,” inspired Mark Llewellyn to begin his musical venture. This album came to life when famed guitarist Don Peake agreed to co-produce and arrange for Mark and provide lead guitar accompaniment. Encouraged by his wife Joni who arranged the first meeting with Don, this work of love has become a reality.

Mark has written ten originals of these 13 songs. Two were co-written by Mark’s son, Mark Jr., and his Nephew, Rowdi Walker. He was also accompanied by a cast of outstanding professional musicians including Mark Epstein, Voyce McGinley III, and Alex DelZoppo, and the final touches in mixing by Ron Hitchcock.

Joan Jones, a native Angelino, grew up on The Sunset Strip’s illustrious music scene. Her first band, Sun 60, released three albums on Sony’s Epic Records label, “SUN60″, “Only”, and “Headjoy”, totally amazing songs, music, and singing by Joan Jones!

After splitting with her band SUN60, Joan teamed up with celebrated producer, Nick Didia, (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, REM, Stone Temple Pilots and many more…) to produce her first solo album, “Starlite Criminal”, on Disney’s Hollywood Records. She has since followed up with Nick Didia making 3 more albums, “Atlanta Sessions”, “Velvet Underdog” and “Brown Blonde”.

She has ALMOST FINISHED work on her next SMOKING HOT ALBUM FOR release in 2009, and this one’s music, lyrics and singing will burn and sear these new songs into your hearts and your minds they are so delicious and amazing….

Joan has been playing, singing and composing music but also doing some of the same with some very talented musicians and especially lately with Mr. Bret Jensen, an amazing guitarist / songwriter / singer, who wrote and sang together the song “Heartbeat” in the recent feature film starring Gerard Butler from “300″ and Academy Award winning actress Hillary Swank’s movie “P.S. I Love You” out in theaters and on DVD. It’s one of those tear jerker movies that makes one glad to be alive and with that certain special someone in one’s life. :-)

She has toured with Cheap Trick, Fastball, SEAL, and Ziggy Marley as well as performed in two Lilith Faire tours.

Joan’s music has also been heard on the MTV shows “The Real World”, “Road Rules”, the WB’s “Felicity”, “Popular”, and “Jack & Jill”, and many more shows.

Joan Jones works in the greater Los Angeles area.

SONGS FROM THE MOBILE HOME
• David Munyon
FROM THE SHADE OF THE BIG MAMOSA
• David Munyon

Here’s something very special and way under the radar from a great underground folk artist. David’s a very eccentric and extremely talented songwriter currently from Dothan, AL, who’s better known in Europe than he is in the States. I first ran into him in Nashville a little over a decade ago–Greg Humphrey, an old friend of mine, was producing him and invited me over to hear his latest project. Heavyweight players were involved–when I walked in, Lee Sklar was in from L.A. and cutting a bass track. The material and sounds were fantastic, and I believe were intended for a memorable CD on Glitterhouse Records called Code Name: Jumper. (Scrolling down the page that the Glitterhouse link leads you to you’ll find English translation, clips, and links to pages for his other albums there.) Munyon has also recorded a number of excellent CDs for Stockfisch Records, another fine German label. I caught a couple of his humble local gigs around that time, and was uniquely impressed. He wasn’t like any songwriter I’d seen before. He’d sit down, put on his reading glasses and open a big book of three or four hundred songs, leaf through it like a Bible, and sing them from a deep quiet and undeniable place, for those who’d lend an ear.

Along with mentioning these fine German labels and previous more-produced CDs, in this review we present two recent solo acoustic CDs the artist cut himself at a local studio (Steve Clayton’s Rayven Audio in Dothan) and is selling himself. The discs are apparently burned one at a time as the need arises, and they go for $20 apiece. David signs every one, and contributes money from each sale to several charities and religious organizations, even though he himself is never far from the poverty line. So we encourage serious songwriters and lovers of that art form to check out a couple of his songs on the Listen page and support the effort, as we do. (Mail order and contact information follows the review.)

Getting back to the story, the next time I saw Munyon was in Heidelberg, Germany, in the mid-90s. I was living there and playing in a duo with my brother Billy, and David and his wife Dixie came to stay in our rooming house in the Bahnhofstrasse (thanks to friends like Matthias, Birgit, and Norbert) which housed many arty and student types. David was doing an extensive tour of several European countries for Glitterhouse Records. He’s very highly regarded In Germany, Holland, France, and places far flung from his roots. We did a gig or two together with him then, and again lost sight of him for a while. He appeared like a phantom at my door in Nashville a couple of days ago, and I was happy to hear his new songs.

David Munyon’s a very complicated guy on the one hand, but an open book on the other. He’s on a spiritual track, but not in any New Age way. His music is more than naked, he’s more like a raw nerve. But if you wanna hear the real thing that goes right back to the spirit of Woody Guthrie, check out the music of David Munyon. • FG

This CD represents the second Volume of my work as the Series Composer on NBC’s hit series “Knight Rider”. I was hired by Robert Foster to score the show after the first 12 episodes.

We had a fabulous band, usually about 35-45 musicians. We had six electronic keyboard players and live brass, guitars, bass, strings and percussion. I have included my Theme Re-Mix, done in 2009.

Ron Hitchcock “Baked” and re-mastered the tracks.

Thanks for listening,

Don Peake
